A few months ago, rumours circulated that Cricket Australia was keen to host a BBL game in India, and now it seems to be happening for real, with the MA Chidambaram Stadium emerging as the frontrunner to host the marquee clash at the end of this year.
The efforts of officials from Cricket Australia to conduct the BBL opener in India have received a positive response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).
According to the Indian Express, five CA representatives
were in attendance at Chennai Super Kings’ home game against Sunrisers
Hyderabad on Monday to inspect the venue and hold talks with senior officials
of BCCI and TNCA.

The talks are still on, but official confirmation is not yet
out. One of the CA representatives said, “We are not able to confirm anything.
We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian
Government to deepen the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as
yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI.”
Expanding the league to target the Indian audience and
attract investment, as the league is ready for privatisation, are the reasons
behind exploring a game in India.
If this happens, the BBL will become the third notable
franchise league in the world to be held outside its home country. The Indian
Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) have previously hosted
matches overseas.
